[Field Log #03] The Spring Explosion: Our 6-Frame Supering Strategy for Rapid Growth

이미지
Late March is here, and the apiary is shifting into high gear. The focus now is on rapid colony expansion to prepare for the upcoming nectar flow. Today, I’m sharing a detailed look at our specific spring supering strategy, designed to maximize comb drawing and brood production. Adding the second deep. Watch how we configure the frames for optimal spring growth. The 6-Frame System In our apiary, we run a very specific setup during the spring buildup. We limit both the bottom brood chamber and the second box (the super) to exactly 6 frames each. We usually add this second box when the bottom chamber has at least 3 to 4 solid frames of capped brood. If a colony is slightly weaker, we wait until they have 5 drawn frames in total before supering. Configuring the Second Box When adding the second box, we don't just throw in empty frames. Here is our exact configuration: Frame 1 (The Anchor): A heavy resource frame (honey/food) placed at the edge. Frames 2 to 6: Fresh foundation fr...

[Field Log #02] Spring Cleaning and a Cozy Nap: Preparing for April

이미지
April is just around the corner, which means it’s time to get everything ready for the rapid growth of the colony. Today's Field Log focuses on preparation—both for the hives and for the hard-working residents. Observation 01: The Supers Are Ready One of the essential spring tasks is cleaning and prepping the honey supers (the second story of the hive). I spent the morning scraping propolis and wax from a stack of supers using my favorite hive tool and scraper. These cleaned boxes are now ready to be placed on top of the strong colonies as soon as the major nectar flow begins. Seeing them all stacked up makes me feel incredibly prepared.   Spring cleaning is done. A fresh stack of supers waiting for the honey flow. Observation 02: A Cozy Nap in the Cat House Even with all the buzzing and cleaning activity, someone always finds a way to take a break. While I was working, our female cat (Joro's sister) decided to take over the little cat house I built for them. She curled up...

[Field Log #01] Spring Watch: The Supervisor and the Success of the Hive

이미지
The busy season has officially arrived at the apiary. Instead of long updates, I’ll be sharing these "Field Logs" to capture the raw, daily moments of my work combining beekeeping and technology. Observation 01: The Tuxedo Supervisor Meet Joro , our resident tuxedo cat. Today, he found the perfect cozy spot on a small gap in the hive insulation blankets. With his "white socks" propped up on the iron hive stand, he spent the morning staring intently at the yard. It seems he’s taking his job as the field supervisor very seriously. Having him by my side makes the heavy lifting feel a bit lighter. Joro on duty. Those white socks are made for supervising. Observation 02: Solid Brood Patterns A quick inspection of the hives today revealed some great progress. I pulled out a frame (Brood Comb) and found a solid, healthy pattern of capped brood. The bee population is growing rapidly, and the frame is covered with active, healthy workers. This is exactly what I want to s...

The Sound of Rain: A Moment of Rest at the Apiary

이미지
Yesterday, a steady rain fell over the yard. The flowers haven't bloomed yet, and the landscape still carries the muted tones of winter. But in early March, this rain isn't just water—it’s the final wake-up call for the season ahead. The apiary was incredibly still. Without the blossoms to visit, the bees stayed tucked away in their hives, and the usual hum of activity was replaced by the rhythmic sound of rain hitting the covers. It’s a strange, peaceful interval where everything is on the verge of starting, yet still holding its breath. Listen to the rhythm of the rain. The silence before the busy season begins. While the earth prepares for the first major nectar flow, I’m using this quiet time to do the same. Just as the wildflowers are soaking up the moisture to fuel their growth, I’m fine-tuning the code and the servers that will soon be tracking every move of the colony. There are no colors in the field just yet, but the sound of the rain tells me they aren’t far off. So...
